Abigail Virginia Moves People With Her Voice and Lyrics

Abigail Virginia is a unique singer/songwriter on several levels. Virginia’s deep vocal tone may be surprising if you haven’t heard her sing before, but she has range. Also, like many who moved to Nashville, Abigail didn’t spend her childhood singing and performing. However, despite her lack of performance experience, she has quickly made a name for herself in Music City. After moving to Nashville less than two years ago, Virginia has worked hard to improve her craft, driven by a competitive spirit fueled by her sports background. Please keep reading to learn more about Abigail Virginia and her music.

From Sports to Music

It’s fascinating to learn Abigail Virginia did not spend her childhood singing on stage, especially when you see her perform. She looks like a natural on stage. The singer/songwriter said, “I grew up in a small town in Alabama called Springville. Growing up, I didn’t do much music because it wasn’t as accessible. So, I played sports year-round. I played basketball, volleyball, soccer, and track. But I always dreamed of being a singer. So, I would sing and write songs for myself. I never played any gigs but sang in church and a few pageants. After I graduated from high school, TikTok became popular. So, I began posting videos on TikTok, and some went viral.

Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is rich in music history and is part of Abigail Virginia’s story. Virginia continued, “I went to college in Florence, Alabama, across the Tennessee River from Muscle Shoals. If you are unfamiliar with it, Muscle Shoals is home to the legendary Fame Studios. So, I met many people in music in college, and it opened my eyes. It awakened me because I did not know you could go into these studios and write with others. So, I dove into it by posting more videos, singing, and collaborating with others around my college town.”

Abigail Virginia Sets Her Sight on Nashville

So, while embracing the music scene in Florence/Muscle Shoals, Abigail Virginia was looking for something more. The Alabama native said, “I was in college for three years but hated it. College was not for me, and music was the only thing getting me to wake up every day. I struggled in college, but music was an outlet. My friend, Lillian Glanton, started the Muscle Shoals Songwriter Festival. At the festival, I met Anthony Smith, who, at the time, was the Vice President of Porchlight Music. Smith was the only contact I had outside of Alabama who could give me an internship. I bugged him for three months until he agreed to provide me with an internship, but I also interned at Picklejar to get my hours. So, I worked forty hours a week for no money, but I figured it out. I was able to stay in Nashville and finish school online. Moving to Nashville was the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Becoming a Songwriter

While Abigail Virginia didn’t spend much time performing while growing up, she was writing songs. The singer/songwriter said, “I was writing songs before I knew what I was doing. In school, I would write songs on paper and throw them away. But I wasn’t thinking of it as anything; I would write stuff. In my mind, the way you got famous was on American Idol. Growing up in a small town, I was so small-minded.”

As someone who grew up in a small town, I can relate to Abigail in that sometimes you don’t realize how big the world can be. Virginia continued, “Like I said before, it took TikTok and going to college for me to learn the world was bigger than I thought. Growing up in this small town, we never went anywhere. It’s not my mom’s fault, but we never went on vacation. So, I had yet to see much of the world, and moving helped with that. During college, I would spend every night in my dorm writing songs. It’s hard to believe, but I didn’t go out and party. I set a goal to write a song every day, and they were awful. But, that’s how you get better.”

Abigail Virginia Shocks People With Her Voice

In January, I came across a television show called “I Can See Your Voice.” The funny thing is I had never even heard of the show. For whatever reason, it was on while I was cooking dinner. Then I heard a familiar voice, so I ran to the TV, and Abigail Virginia was on the screen. But it had been a while since I had seen Abigail, so I immediately messaged her to confirm what my ears had heard. Watching the celebrity panel doubt Abigail could be singing with that voice was hilarious. But, if you had never heard Virginia sing, I imagine your jaw would drop, too. I know mine did the first time I saw her perform.

Abigail Virginia caught the attention of more than just the celebrity panel on the show as her social media following continued to increase. Virginia said, “I think they booked me to shock people because of my voice and how I look. My whole life, people made fun of me because of my voice. People would mimic me. I don’t know where it comes from, but I’ve always said I was blessed with an Eve’s apple. It’s just how God made me. However, it took me a long time to figure out my voice and find better people to sing with. Another reason my voice is so unique is when I would sing along to songs, I couldn’t sing like they did. So, I would repeatedly sing a song I liked, acapella, until I created something unique. The deep tone shocks people. As I was growing up, I never tried to copy anyone because my voice didn’t match anyone on the radio. As I have gotten older, I have worked hard to extend my range to higher notes.”

A Pop/Soul Artist in a Town Built on Country

Contrary to what you may see on TV, the Nashville music scene is diverse. If you judge by the tourists on Broadway, we all wear boots and cowboy hats. But that is just a part of Nashville. There is a growing pop scene in Music City, and Abigail Virginia has found a home there. Songhouse has done a great job helping shed light on the fantastic pop and R&B writers in town. Abigail Virginia is one of those songwriters. While you may wonder how someone from Alabama became a pop/soul singer/songwriter, remember the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, found her sound in Muscle Shoals.

So, what are Abigail Virginia’s musical roots? The singer/songwriter said, “I grew up singing a lot of older country music, so there are some influences there. But I also love soul music, so I am soulful, too. My dad listened to a lot of that music as well. But the first time I heard Adele on the radio, I thought that’s what I wanted to do. Beyonce also had some swag to her. So, I was a little diva, and I wanted to have a big voice and be cool. I fell in love with the big pop production.”

Abigail Virginia Releases “People Don’t Love”

Following up the releases of “Set It On Fire” and Virginia’s version of “House of the Rising Sun,” on April 12th, Abigail released “People Don’t Love.” Abigail wrote the song with Zachary Stein, and hit songwriter Paul Sikes produced it. Virginia said, ” I had gotten out of a relationship six months before I brought the idea to Zach. So I had time to process everything. I wanted to write a song about why people want love. Then Zach said, “Won’t love like people won’t love.” I said it could be cool to “do want and don’t.” So, the song realizes why people want love and why you don’t because it’s great at first, but when it ends, it’s awful. The song is personal to me, so I love and am very excited about it.”

To Those Who Are New to Abigail Virginia

There is more to Abigail Virginia than her incredible voice. Her personality shines through in her music. Abigail said, “As a person, I am a deep thinker. I am an overthinker. That comes through in my songwriting. For example, in “Set It On Fire” and “People Don’t Love,” listening to the lyrics is like deep-diving into yourself. Who I am as a person comes out in the writing. I hope my listeners know that there is always something better and people love you. I want them to feel they are not alone and that my music evokes emotion in those listening.”

Abigail Virginia has more music coming. She took a minute to preview the next single. The singer/songwriter said, “The next single coming is a song called, “Fall in Love.” It follows “People Don’t Love” well. It’s about the same relationship, and even though it sucked, I understand why people don’t love, but at least I know I can still fall in love. It’s a big power song. So be on the lookout for the release date.”

My Thoughts

I say this a lot in my articles, but Abigail Virginia has the makings of a superstar. If I didn’t believe it, I wouldn’t write it. With such a unique voice and lyrics that are so moving and impactful, the Alabama native will continue to amaze people. The sky is the limit if she can turn her TikTok viewers into ticket buyers and dedicated fans. In the meantime, listen to her music and see her live when you can. Her authenticity will draw you into her music and live shows. I can’t wait to see how far Abigail Virginia will go, and I am happy to be a small part of her journey.
